Ligon is a Magnet Middle School that serves magnet students from all over Raleigh. Approximately 1/3 of Ligon's 1,000 students are from Southeast Raleigh, an area of our city, which struggles with poverty, broken homes, youth gang involvement, and academic under-achievement.
Our passion to serve our city simply comes from the amazing love of God shown to us through the Gospel of Jesus Christ and from our church's desire to be a credible witness in word and deed to this good news. Adopting Ligon is a practical way for our church to serve our city because it enables us to serve community leaders (i.e. principals & teachers) as well as struggling inner city families.
A key verse that anchors our efforts in God’s Word: "And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction." - Matthew 9:35
Adopting Partnership So Far:
- On Campus: There are Fellowship Raleigh members who serve as faculty at Ligon
- Backpack Outreach: For 2 consecutive years (2009/10) we have put on a school supply event on Ligon’s campus at the beginning of the school year where we handed out 400 backpacks filled with school supplies, provided food and entertainment.
- Faculty Breakfast: Served the entire faculty breakfast, juice, and coffee at the beginning of 2010 school year
- Heart for the City Sunday: The Ligon Principal attended and shared her heart for Ligon at Fellowship Raleigh’s Sunday morning gathering.
- Paper Drive: Our church collected copy paper for Ligon, a great need for the school.
- Clothing collection: Collected clothes and other household items for Ligon families in need at Christmas
- Training for future efforts: FR members have been trained and certified by the National Church Adopt a School Initiative (NCAASI). This will help us launch an on site mentoring program in the near future.
- Tips for Parents Seminar: One of our Fellowship Groups taught a seminar titled, "Tips for Parents." The seminar was targeted towards parents of struggling students.
- Pastoral Intern sent to Ligon: We have commissioned a Pastoral Intern to spearhead our efforts at Ligon. He is currently mentoring students and overseeing the launch of our church’s mentoring program in the fall of 2011.
